The United States and Iran are expected to return to Islamabad, Pakistan, next week for a second round of peace negotiations to seek a diplomatic conclusion to the ongoing war. According to two senior Pakistani officials, discussions are currently underway to finalize the meetings, which follow a previous round of talks and a fragile ceasefire.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on April 15, 2026, that discussions are being had and stated that the administration feels good about the prospects of a deal.

Ceasefire and Regional Tensions

The push to resume negotiations comes as a two-week ceasefire between the U.S. And Iran remains shaky. Tensions continue to rise in the Persian Gulf, further imperiling the truce. This ceasefire was established following a conflict that began on February 28, 2026, and escalated after coordinated U.S. And Israeli strikes on Iran six weeks prior to April 9, 2026, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The conflict has caused thousands of deaths across multiple countries and severely disrupted global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical trade route that typically carries 20% of the world’s oil, has seen oil tanker traffic reduced to a trickle. What we have is due to ongoing threats from Iran toward passing vessels and a retaliatory blockade of Iranian ports enforced by the United States.

President Donald Trump previously stated that the ceasefire agreement was contingent upon the full reopening of the strait. He announced the blockade of certain shipping in the Strait of Hormuz in response to the lack of activity in the shipping route and the failure of the first round of talks.

Economic and Diplomatic Pressures

Concurrent with the diplomatic efforts, Iran has increased economic pressure. The Iranian state news outlet Fars reported on April 15, 2026, that Tehran is suspending all petrochemical exports until further notice.

The diplomatic effort in Pakistan has involved several high-level U.S. Officials. On April 12, 2026, U.S. Vice President JD Vance held a news conference in Islamabad after meeting with representatives from Pakistan and Iran. He was accompanied by Jared Kushner, son-in-law to President Trump, and Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East.

The role of Pakistan as a mediator was highlighted by Al Jazeera on April 9, 2026, noting that the country is attempting to provide an off-ramp for both nations despite deep mistrust and regional instability, including intensified Israeli bombing in Lebanon.

Timeline of Negotiations

The trajectory of the current diplomatic push has seen several shifts in timing and location over the past few days:

Timeline of Negotiations
Iran Pakistan Islamabad
  • On April 14, 2026, a White House official told CNBC that a second round of negotiations was under discussion but not yet officially scheduled.
  • President Donald Trump later told the New York Post that talks could be happening over next two days in Islamabad, after initially suggesting they might occur in Europe.
  • An official at the Iranian Embassy in Islamabad informed Reuters that talks could occur either late in the week of April 14 or early the following week.
  • By April 15, 2026, Pakistani officials indicated that the return to the negotiating table in Pakistan would likely occur next week.

The upcoming talks are viewed as a critical attempt to establish a lasting peace before the current two-week ceasefire deadline expires next week.
