The United States and Iran failed to reach a peace agreement to end the six-week war between the U.S. And Israel against Iran after 21 hours of high-stakes negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan. Vice President JD Vance, who led the U.S. Delegation, announced on April 12, 2026, that the talks ended without a deal after Iranian officials refused to accept American terms.
Following the collapse of the negotiations, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy would effective immediately
prevent ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping chokepoint. The president accused Iran of extorting the United States, noting that he had previously criticized Iran for blocking the waterway.
In addition to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command announced the implementation of a blockade of all maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports. This operation was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET on April 13, 2026. U.S. Officials specified that the port blockade would not affect vessels using the Strait of Hormuz to travel to and from non-Iranian ports.
Details of the Islamabad Negotiations
The face-to-face meetings in the Pakistani capital represented the highest-level diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The discussions lasted 21 hours and began on April 11, 2026. Vice President Vance described the talks as substantive discussions
but stated that the U.S. Team was unwilling to compromise on its red lines
.

A central point of contention was the Iranian nuclear program. Vance stated that the U.S. Required a fundamental commitment
from Tehran to ensure it would not seek to develop a nuclear weapon or the tools necessary to achieve one quickly.
The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America.
Vice President JD Vance
While the U.S. Delegation maintained that its final and best offer
remained on the table, Iranian state media reported that excessive demands
from the United States sank the possibility of an agreement.
During the 21-hour marathon, Vance reported being in consistent contact with President Trump, stating they spoke a half dozen to a dozen times. The U.S. Team also communicated with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Regional Conflict and Casualties
The diplomatic failure occurs amid an ongoing conflict. The human rights group HRANA has estimated the total death toll at nearly 3,400 people, including more than 1,600 civilians, though Iranian officials have not released a recent official death toll.
The instability extends to Lebanon, where Israeli strikes continued in the southern town of Nabatieh during the previous week, resulting in several deaths. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated his goal is to secure a real peace agreement that will last for generations
with Lebanon.
As the U.S. Delegation departed Pakistan, reports indicated that Iranian authorities remained defiant, urging their supporters to remain in the streets.
