US PCE Price Index Rises 2.8% in March, Tops Expectations

The US Department of Commerce announced on the 26th (local time) that the core PCE price index in March rose 0.3% compared to the previous month.

This figure is in line with the market forecast of an increase of 0.3% compiled by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The monthly increase was the same in March and February.

The PCE core price index rose 0.5% month-on-month in January, again fueling inflation concerns, but monthly gains were limited to 0.3% in February and March, showing signs of slowing somewhat degrees.

The PCE core price index in March rose 2.8% compared to the same period last year, beating market expectations of a 2.7% increase by 0.1 percentage point.

The core PCE price index excludes highly volatile energy and food prices.

The March PCE price index, which includes energy and food prices, also rose 0.3% from the previous month, meeting market expectations.

The PCE price index in March rose by 2.7% compared to the same period last year, slightly more than the expected increase of 2.6%.

The PCE price index also showed the same monthly increase as last February.

Consumer spending by US households, which account for two-thirds of the US economy, remained robust.

Personal consumption expenditure in March increased by 0.8% compared to the previous month, showing the same monthly rate of increase as personal consumption expenditure in February. Personal consumption expenditure in March exceeded market expectations for a 0.7% increase.

Personal income (after tax) in March increased by 0.5% compared to the previous month, meeting market expectations. February’s figure was an increase of 0.3%.
