US Secretary of State Tony Blinken visits Israel and Jordan to discuss the release of hostages.

According to Reuters and AFP on the 28th (local time), the US State Department announced that Secretary Blinken will visit Jordan and Israel after completing his trip to Saudi Arabia.

Secretary Blinken will attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) special meeting and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) ministerial meeting held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from the 29th to the 30th. After that, they will move to Jordan and Israel and stay there until May 1. The exact schedule was not disclosed.

Previously, US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a phone call regarding the release of the hostages. The two spoke for about an hour, with three quarters of the call focusing on possible negotiations, according to an administration official.

Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have been mediating to develop ceasefire talks between Israel and the Palestinian armed faction Hamas. The US-backed ceasefire would require Israel to stop fighting for six weeks and release hundreds of Palestinians held in prison in exchange for 40 hostages held by Hamas, women, the elderly and the mainly those with health problems.

A spokesperson for the United States Department of State, Matthew Miller, explained during this trip, “Secretary Blinken will discuss the increase in humanitarian aid that has recently been provided to the Gaza Strip and will emphasize the importance of ensuring that this trend continues. ” He added, “We will discuss the direction towards an independent Palestinian state that guarantees Israel’s security and ensures lasting peace and security in the Middle East region.”
