A U.S.Navy ocean surveillance ship, the USNS Victorious, has been tracked in the South China Sea,according to the U.S. Seventh Fleet. The ship’s presence coincides with ongoing territorial disputes and a growing U.S. and China naval presence in the region.
The Seventh Fleet confirmed the Victorious is conducting what it called routine operations. The South China Sea is a strategically important waterway with overlapping claims from China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei. These disputes frequently lead to maritime confrontations.
Equipped with a Surveillance Towed-Array Sensor System (SURTASS),the Victorious is designed to gather undersea acoustic data, supporting anti-submarine warfare efforts. Ship-tracking data indicates the vessel has been in the South China Sea as at least May 22, passing through the Luzon Strait.
The South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative, a Chinese think tank, reported the Victorious operated near the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal. Several nations claim the Spratly Islands, while China has controlled scarborough Shoal,a traditional fishing ground within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone,as 2012.
Prior to its South China Sea deployment, the Victorious was observed in early May transiting southward through the Uraga Channel, south of Tokyo, Japan. The vessel is categorized as a “Special Mission” ship, supporting various U.S. military and government operations. The U.S. Navy maintains a persistent naval presence in the South China Sea.
