US State Department spokesman resigns over Gaza policy

Hala Rarit, the Arabic-language spokeswoman for the US State Department, has resigned in opposition to Washington’s policy on Israel’s brutal attacks on the besieged Palestinian territory of Gaza. He became the third US official to resign to protest the same policy. He submitted his resignation on Thursday local time.

Hala Rarit was deputy director of the Dubai Regional Media Hub and joined the State Department 18 years ago as a political and human rights officer, according to reports on the US State Department website.

He wrote on the social networking site LinkedIn, ‘I resigned in April 2024 after 18 years of distinguished service in opposition to the United States’ Gaza policy.’

When asked about the resignation, Hala Rarit told Reuters news agency that State Department officials can express disagreement with government policy.

About a month ago, Annele Chelain of the State Department’s Bureau of Human Rights announced her resignation, and State Department official Josh Paul resigned last October. Earlier, US State Department official Josh Paul resigned shortly after the start of Israel’s operation in Gaza in opposition to Joe Biden’s destructive and unjust weapons policy. He was the director of the US Department of Armaments.

Earlier in January this year, Tariq Habash, a senior official of the country’s education department of Palestinian-American origin, resigned in opposition to the US policy.

Tel Aviv continues to indiscriminately attack Gaza after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7. The US has come under intense criticism from inside and outside and from human rights groups for directly supporting their brutal attacks and massacres.
