Madras High Court Rules Against Ilayaraja’s Exclusive Rights to Composed Songs

Chennai: The Madras High Court rejected the claim that Ilayaraja had exclusive rights to all the songs composed by him. Justice R. said that there can be no songs without words, so song writers and singers can claim the songs. A bench comprising Justice Mahadevan and Justice Mohammad Shafiq observed.

The court was hearing an appeal filed by the music company Eko in a case related to the copyright of around 4500 songs composed by Ilayaraja.

The Echo company had bought the copyright of the songs composed by Ilayaraja from the film makers. The High Court considered the petition against this and a single bench ruled that Ilayaraja had the rights to the songs. The company appealed.

The company’s lawyer argued that once the producer appoints the music director for the songs in the film, the producer gets the rights to the songs.

The court decided that the plea should be heard in detail saying that the case will be considered again in the second week of June. While hearing this case earlier, the same bench had decided that Ilayaraja should not be considered above all in music.
