Discontent erupted in Israel when the US government stopped providing some weapons to counter the ground operation being prepared by Israel in Rafah, the southernmost city of the Gaza Strip.

It is argued that although ceasefire negotiations are currently underway between Israel and Hamas, Hamas could become uncooperative in the negotiations due to US measures.

On the 8th (local time), US Axios reported, citing sources, that senior Israeli officials expressed “deep regret” to the US over the US government’s decision to suspend arms support.

In addition, the Israeli side emphasized that the actions of the United States could put pressure on Hamas, not Israel, by saying that the hostage release and the truce negotiations currently underway in Cairo, Egypt could become difficult.

The US government previously announced a temporary suspension of arms aid, saying it was opposed to Israel’s attack on Rafah.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a Senate hearing that day, “We have been very clear from the beginning that Israel should not launch a large-scale attack on Rafah without accountability and protection for civilians on the battlefield .” “We have stopped transporting one batch of high explosive ammunition,” he said.

In relation to this, US President Joe Biden also said in an interview with CNN, “Weapons supplied by the United States to Israel were used to kill civilians (in the Gaza Strip). Currently, support for these weapons has come to an end.”

The quantity of bombs whose shipment was stopped is said to be a total of 3,500 bombs, including 1,800 2,000 lb (about 900 kg) bombs and 1,700 500 lb (about 225 kg) bombs.

The US suspension of shipments of bombs reveals differences of opinion between the US and Israel regarding the start of the Rafah ground war, and is interpreted as a warning message from the US to Israel.

However, US officials told Axios that Israel’s Rafah operation so far has been “limited” and has not crossed the “red line” that could lead to a general change in policy towards Israel.
