[뉴욕=뉴스핌]Correspondent Kim Geun-cheol = The US government is increasing the level of pressure on the suspicions that the leading anti-government activist in Russia, Alexei Navalny, has died in prison.

John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator for the White House National Security Council, said in an online press briefing on the 20th (local time) that a “significant sanctions package” related to Navalny’s mysterious death will be announced on the 23rd.

He gave no details but said the sanctions package would “hold Russia accountable for what happened to Navalny and for its actions during the war in Ukraine at the direction of President Joe Biden.”

Coordinator Kirby emphasized, “Regardless of what the Russian government says, it is clear that President Putin and his government are responsible for Navalny’s death.”

He then said that the US Embassy in Russia was seeking additional information about Navalny’s death and urged the Russian government to clearly disclose related information.

Suspicion over the death was heightened when Russian authorities announced that Navalny, who had recently been transferred to a notorious prison in the Siberian Arctic Circle, had died suddenly after a walk on the 16th.

He, who led the civil anti-corruption movement against President Putin, showed symptoms of poisoning and lost consciousness on a domestic flight in 2020, but was evacuated to Germany and dramatically survived after receiving treatment.

After completing treatment, he returned to Russia, but was arrested by judicial authorities and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
