Lavelle Returns as USWNT Focuses on Future
Rose Lavelle has been named to the U.S. women’s national team roster for the first time in six months, marking her return after ankle surgery last December. She joins 24 other players called up by coach Hayes for a training camp that includes three matches.
The USWNT will face the Republic of Ireland twice, on June 26 in commerce City, Colo., and June 29 in Cincinnati, Ohio, before taking on Canada on July 2 in Washington, D.C.
Bethune, the 2024 NWSL Rookie of the Year, is also back after recovering from knee surgery, her first time with the national team as last summer’s Paris Olympics. Yazmeen Ryan is also on the roster, having recovered from an injury that kept her out of the last camp.
Notably absent are the USWNT’s European-based players, whom Hayes is giving a break after their long club seasons. The focus remains on the 2027 World Cup, with an emphasis on rest and recovery before qualifying begins later this year. Naomi Girma is the only European-based player on the roster.
Four players received their first senior squad call-ups: defenders Jordyn Bugg, Lilly Reale, and Izzy Rodriguez, and midfielder Sam Meza. Six players in the group are uncapped. Hayes aims to expand the player pool for the 2027 World Cup and 2028 Olympics. These four players previously trained in Germany with the U-23 team.
“We want to continue to improve our understanding of how we want to play and widen the player pool,” Hayes said. “My priority is to deepen the exposures required for international soccer.”
With key players like Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman missing, along with the European contingent, the squad skews young, averaging 24.5 years old. The average player has 18.4 caps, but excluding six veterans, that number drops to 3.3 caps per player.
In the goalkeeper competition, Phallon Tullis-Joyce is absent, giving Mandy McGlynn, Claudia Dickey, and Angelina Anderson a chance to impress. Only McGlynn has previous USWNT experience with three caps.
