UW Medical Center Reports Two Cases of ‘Regional Disease’ Infection

Two patients at the University of Washington (UW) Medical Center have been diagnosed with a severe form of pneumonia known as “Regional disease,” hospital officials revealed. The origin of the infections remains unknown, but it is suspected that the patients may have contracted the illness while receiving treatment in September last year. While one of the patients has been discharged, no conclusive evidence has been found regarding the route of infection.

Dubbed “Regionaire,” this deadly disease gained notoriety in 1976 when participants of a veterans gathering in Philadelphia fell victim to its wrath. Health experts have reported approximately 10,000 cases of Regionnaire across the country in 2018, although the actual number is believed to be higher.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has cautioned that breathing in vapor or water contaminated with the Regionella virus can lead to infection. Shockingly, the mortality rate for Regionnaire’s disease stands at a staggering 10%.

Disturbingly, two prior fatalities attributed to Regionella occurred at UW Medical Center in 2016. The hospital authorities subsequently discovered traces of the virus in the Cascade ward’s sink, heating and cooling systems, as well as the ice maker.

In response to the recent cases, thorough investigations into the water-related systems within the ward have been conducted by hospital authorities. However, the test results have come back negative for Regionella. Collaborating closely with the state health department, the Seattle County Health Department-King, and the CDC, the medical center is determined to identify the cause of these infections and mitigate further risks.

Two patients treated at the University of Washington (UW) Medical Center were infected with ‘Regional disease,’ a type of severe pneumonia known as ‘legendary disease,’ hospital authorities said.

The hospital said that these two patients may have been infected during treatment last September and that one has been discharged, and it has not been confirmed by which route they were infected.

In 1976, when attendees of a veterans (Legion) gathering in Philadelphia were infected with this disease together, the virus was named ‘Regionella’ and the disease was given the name ‘Regionaire’. Health authorities said around 10,000 Regionnaire patients were reported across the country in 2018, and the actual number is likely to be higher.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that if vapor or water containing the Regionella virus is inhaled incorrectly into the lungs, one can become infected with Regionnaire’s disease, and that the death rate this disease about 1 in 10 patients. .

At UW Medical Center, two patients with Regionella died in 2016. At the time, hospital authorities announced that the Regionallla virus had been found in the sink, heating and cooling equipment, and ice maker in the Cascade ward.

Hospital authorities said they once again thoroughly investigated the ward’s water-related system, but the test result was negative for Regionella, and that they are working closely with the state health department, the Seattle County Health Department- King, and the CDC to determine the cause.
