Valve’s Upcoming Steam Controller 2 and VR Headset ‘Deckard’: Everything We Know
Valve is developing new hardware after the Steam Deck’s launch over two years ago. A recent leak by Brad Lynch, a known figure in the VR community, revealed that Valve is working on an updated Steam Controller and a new VR headset, codenamed “Deckard.”
Images of the new Steam Controller, codenamed “Ibex,” show design similarities to the Steam Deck. It features dual touchpads and symmetrical analog sticks. The Deckard’s controllers, known as “Roy,” resemble the Meta Quest 3’s Touch Plus controllers. They include standard ABXY buttons, bumpers, and grip triggers. Each button will have capacitive touch, and optional straps will be available.
Information about the Deckard VR headset first surfaced in 2021 in SteamVR files. It is expected to use an ARM processor instead of the x86 architecture of the Steam Deck. This marks a departure from the Valve Index, the previous VR headset, which required a connected computer.
Valve may launch the new Steam Controller 2 and “Roy” controllers around 2025, although no official announcements have been made. The company is also conducting private playtests for its upcoming game, Deadlock, while developing other projects, including Half-Life 3.
