The Significance of ASEAN’s Founding
Ho Chi Minh City (HCM City) recently hosted a celebration marking the 57th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The event underscored the strong bonds of solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and its fellow ASEAN member states, reflecting a commitment to regional cooperation and stability.
Established on August 8, 1967, ASEAN initially comprised Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Its founding principles centered on promoting peace, stability, and economic growth within Southeast Asia. Today, ASEAN boasts ten member states – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – representing a combined population of over 680 million people and a total GDP of approximately $3.6 trillion (World Bank, 2022).
Vietnam’s Active Role Since 1995
Phan Thi Hong Xuan, Chairwoman of the Vietnam – ASEAN Friendship Association in HCM City, emphasized Vietnam’s dedicated participation since joining ASEAN in 1995. Despite joining later than some founding members, Vietnam has consistently demonstrated a commitment to the organization’s goals and has played a crucial role in its development.
Xuan specifically highlighted Vietnam’s instrumental role in integrating Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia into ASEAN. This support wasn’t merely symbolic; Vietnam provided significant technical assistance and economic support to these nations, facilitating their accession and strengthening ASEAN’s overall cohesion. This proactive approach has considerably enhanced ASEAN’s global reputation as an inclusive and effective regional body.
Addressing Regional challenges: A Three-Decade Commitment
Over the past three decades, Vietnam has consistently aligned with other ASEAN members to address a wide spectrum of challenges. These range from conventional security concerns to emerging threats like climate change, pandemics, and socio-economic disparities. This collaborative spirit is a cornerstone of ASEAN’s success.
Vietnam’s 2020 ASEAN Chairmanship was particularly noteworthy. Facing the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam spearheaded numerous initiatives to mitigate the crisis. These included establishing the ASEAN COVID-19 Response Fund, facilitating the sharing of essential medical supplies, and promoting regional cooperation on vaccine development and distribution. Vietnam also prioritized maintaining peace and stability, fostering economic recovery, advancing gender equality, and accelerating digital conversion during its chairmanship.
