According to statistics from the World Health Organization, breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer affecting Thai women. Each year, an alarming 22,158 individuals in Thailand are diagnosed with this devastating disease, resulting in the loss of as many as 8,266 lives. The National Cancer Institute also reports that a staggering 23 breast cancer cases are identified every single day in the country, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive diagnosis and prompt treatment.

In an effort to combat this alarming trend and promote awareness, Bangkok Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital has launched the noteworthy event “Voice of Care, Voice of Care, Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023.” This event seeks to underscore the importance of breast cancer screening, urging everyone to prioritize early detection as a means of effectively combating this leading cause of death among Thai women.

Advocating the Voice of Care

Special Professor Dr. Teerawut Kuhaprema, Director of Bangkok Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital, explained the significance of the event, stating, “We aim to be a compassionate voice, amplifying the sound of care. This refers to caregivers who recognize the importance of supporting their loved ones, including men who are surrounded by cherished individuals such as partners, friends, mothers, and relatives. By promoting love and care, we encourage all women in these relationships to prioritize breast cancer screening, thereby safeguarding their health and lives.”

By facilitating open dialogue and knowledge sharing, the event featured an insightful discussion titled, “The Sound of Caring… Loving Someone Wholeheartedly Calls for Breast Cancer Screening.” This presentation was spearheaded by Dr. Sathit Srimanthayamat, Director of the Breast Center at Bangkok Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital. Additionally, artist and actor Khun Tu Popathorn Sunthornyanakit, along with his wife Khun Nuch Nuchanan, emphasized the importance of men’s roles in caregiving, highlighting the significance of their support in breast cancer awareness.

The event also included a session called “Voices from the CSR Project,” which provided valuable information on ways to ensure effective care and treatment for breast cancer patients. Speakers in this session included Special Professor Dr. Teerawut Kuhaprema, Dr. Phaisan Lertruedeeporn from the Vejdusit Foundation, and Dr. Sarawan Sriwanichwiphatṭhā, Head of the Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Group at the National Cancer Institute.

The event concluded on a positive note with a donation ceremony for the Vejdusit Foundation CSR social support project. This initiative aims to provide diagnostic tests, such as PET CT scans, to efficiently determine the stage of the disease and enable timely follow-up. Through this project, 52 cancer patients will gain access to prompt diagnosis and treatment at Bangkok Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital.
