Vote to Abolish Twin Special Prosecutors Act Fails in Plenary Session: What Happens Next?

In the plenary session held today, Justice Minister Park Sung-je explains the reason for requesting the proposal. what good news
The Twin Special Prosecutors’ Act (Kim Kun-hee’s Stock Price Manipulation, Daejang-dong 5 Billion Club), on which President Yoon Seok-yeol exercised his right to request a review (veto), was again put to the vote in plenary session of the National Assembly, but it was rejected and ultimately abolished.

The National Assembly held a plenary session on the 29th and put the Special Double Prosecution Law to anonymous voting again, but in the case of “Kim Kun-hee’s stock price manipulation special procedure”, the resolution was canceled as 171 out of 281 members present supported it. There were 109 downvotes and 1 invalid vote. The special investigation into the 5 billion Daejang-dong club was rejected with 177 in favor and 104 against out of 281 present.

The Twin Special Prosecutors’ Act is a bill that introduces a special prosecutor to investigate suspicions of manipulation of the stock price of Deutsche Motors by President Yoon’s wife, Kim Kun-hee, and corruption in the “club of 5 billion” for the Daejeon-dong development project. Repassing a bill vetoed by the President requires the presence of a majority of registered legislators and the approval of more than two-thirds of members present, but both bills failed to pass the threshold for approval. approval (188 in favour).

Since at the general meeting of all members of the plenary session the People Power Party decided to reject the law on twin special prosecutors as its party line, it seems that the majority of the ruling party members (110 members present) voted against. Although the Democratic Party of Korea did not determine the vote according to its party line, adding the number of seats for the Democratic Party (total 163 seats) and the number of seats for opposition-oriented independents and minority parties, the overall approval rating was close. In other words, it is analyzed that there were almost no exit votes from both parties.

The People Power Party stressed that the rejected bill is “an evil law for general elections and to disturb public sentiment.” Group leader Yoon Jae-ok met with reporters after the plenary session and said, “Many people were worried because there was no vote for a long time after the right to request reconsideration had been exercised,” but ” It is unfortunate that the matter has been resolved.” in the last plenary session of the National Assembly in February, but that’s lucky.” On the other hand, Hong Ik-pyo, leader of the Democratic Party, met with reporters in the Rotender Hall opposite the main conference hall and criticized the government and the ruling party, saying, “The members of the National Assembly betrayed their conscience.” and “In the end, they chose First Lady Kim Kun-hee, not the people.”

These bills were spearheaded by the Democratic Party and passed the plenary session of the National Assembly on December 28 last year, but returned to the National Assembly on the 5th of last month when President Yoon exercised his veto. The Democratic Party has delayed the re-voting period for nearly two months, weighing whether to request a decision on the power dispute and vote to leave the People Power Party. However, because the People Power Party minimized the limit (exclusion of nominations) of active members during the nomination process, it became difficult to expect votes to go away, so they announced the processing on the 29th.
