Minnesota Democrats Targeted After Shooting; Manhunt Intensifies

A list of potential targets, including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, was discovered following a targeted shooting that left one state representative dead and another wounded, law enforcement sources said Saturday. The Minnesota Democrats also included U.S. Sen.Tina Smith and Attorney general Keith Ellison.
The victims of Saturday’s violence, State Rep. Melissa Hortman and State Sen. John Hoffman, were also named on the list, which was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle, according to police. Hortman is a former speaker of the Minnesota House. Authorities are investigating whether the suspect’s motive was connected to extreme views on abortion,sources told ABC News.
The suspect’s vehicle, which resembled a police car and had police lights, was located in Hortman’s driveway, officials said. A manhunt is currently underway, and Brooklyn Park is under a shelter-in-place order.
Gov.Walz released a statement condemning the violence. “We are not a country that settles our differences at gunpoint,” Walz said. “We have demonstrated again and again in our state that it is possible to peacefully disagree, that our state is strengthened by civil public debate.We must stand united against all forms of violence.”
“We will spare no resource in bringing those responsible to justice,” he added.
