Ireland extradited to Croatia Vojislav Buzaković, suspected of war crimes during the 1991-1995 War of Independence, who was allegedly a member of a paramilitary group in the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Country and had been in hiding for 16 years. It is reported by the BBC.

Croatia accused Vojislav Buzaković of mistreating civilians during the war in Yugoslavia during the six months between 1991-1992, in particular illegal detentions, imprisonments, interrogations and other mistreatment of civilians in the village of Petrovci, occupation.

The publication notes that Buzakovich was hiding in Ireland for 15 years. But in July 2021, the Croatian authorities issued a European warrant for his arrest. He was detained on February 1 this year, and already on March 30 he was extradited, which became known only now. There he will stand trial.

On June 25, 1991 Croatia declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This caused discontent among the Croatian Serbs, and in response, they proclaimed the Republic of the Serbian Country.

The Serbs held an unrecognized mono-ethnic referendum on secession from Croatia and joining the Republika Srpska, also an unrecognized self-proclaimed state entity on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The separatist Serbs were supported by the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA).

On August 25, 1991, the Serbian occupation troops cordoned off the Croatian border town of Vukovar. One of the bloodiest battles of the war of the Croatian War of Independence began. The siege of the city lasted 87 days. The battle ended with the defeat of the local unit of the Croatian National Guard, the great devastation of Vukovar, and numerous killings and persecution of the Croatian population. Between 2,900 and 3,600 people died in the bloody battle for Vukovar. Serbs committed massacres of the civilian population, mainly Croats. More than 260 civilians and soldiers became victims of the massacre near Vukovar.
