Warning Issued for Bacterial Meningitis Outbreak in New York City: 1 Death and 11 Infections Reported

The New York City Department of Health has issued a warning for “bacterial meningitis.”

The city health bureau said on the 1st: “As bacterial meningitis is spreading, one person has died and 11 people have been infected in five districts of the city so far this year,” and urged: “Doctors must monitor patients carefully.”

According to data from the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC), a total of 28 people were infected with bacterial meningitis in New York City last year, an increase of 13 from 15 in 2021. The death rate has reached 7%.
The number of people infected with bacterial meningitis is increasing nationwide, with 422 people infected last year, the highest number since 2014.

Notably, as of the 25th of last month this year, 143 people nationwide were infected with bacterial meningitis, a huge increase of 76.5% (62) compared to 81 the previous year.
According to the city’s health department, “bacterial meningitis” is much more deadly than the common “viral meningitis.”

Bacterial meningitis, caused by a bacterial infection called “Neisseria Meningitis”, can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache and seizures and can lead to serious consequences and death.

According to the CDC, bacterial meningitis can be prevented through vaccination. Currently, in the United States, the first vaccination is recommended between 11 and 12 years of age and an additional vaccination at 16 years of age.
