The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has expelled showrunners Don Park and Michael McKellar, the creative forces behind the critically acclaimed HBO series The Sympathizer, for allegedly violating guild rules during the 2023 writers’ strike. the decision, recommended by the Strike rules Compliance Committee, marks a meaningful escalation in the WGA’s enforcement of strike regulations and raises questions about the future of Park and McKellar’s careers in Hollywood.
‘The Sympathizer’ Success Overshadowed by WGA Action
The Sympathizer, a seven-episode adaptation of Viet thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, premiered on HBO on April 14, 2024, after facing delays due to the strike. The series, centered around the Vietnam War, garnered significant attention, with Robert Downey Jr.receiving an emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance in five different roles. While Downey Jr. ultimately lost to Lamorne Morris of Fargo, the show itself was a critical success.Park and McKellar, who served as showrunners and writers for the entire series, were already working on their next project, a black comedy titled No Other Choice, set to debut at the Venice Film Festival later this month. Though, the WGA’s disciplinary action casts a shadow over their recent achievements.
Consequences of the Expulsion: Limited Future Opportunities
The WGA’s decision to expel Park and McKellar, described as “far from newbie members,” is particularly severe. While No Other Choice is unlikely to be directly impacted, the expulsion effectively bars them from working for any company that has signed the WGA’s collective bargaining agreement – including major studios like Disney, HBO, and Netflix.
Even though Park, born in South Korea, and McKellar, born in Canada, possess the ability to seek work in the global market, the loss of access to the lucrative and influential American entertainment industry represents a significant career setback. The WGA’s constitution stipulates that readmission to membership is not guaranteed and may require a fine and/or other conditions.
WGA Continues to Enforce Strike Rules
This action follows an earlier declaration in april where the WGA publicly disclosed disciplinary measures against six members for alleged unauthorized work during the 2023 strike, and one additional member for violating the guild’s constitution. The WGA has now stated that with the action against park, McKellar, and another member, Cipriano, “there are no further strike related disciplines and all Article X proceedings arising from the 2023 strike have concluded.”
The WGA’s firm stance underscores its commitment to protecting its members and upholding the integrity of collective bargaining. The expulsions serve as a warning to others who may consider crossing picket lines or engaging in unauthorized work during future labor disputes. the Guild’s actions demonstrate a willingness to enforce its rules, even against established and accomplished members of the industry.
