A wrong-way crash on Arizona’s Loop 101 in Scottsdale Saturday night left six people hospitalized, including one with serious injuries, as authorities worked to determine the cause of the multi-vehicle collision. The incident, which occurred near the Chaparral Road exit around 11 p.m., involved a black sedan traveling southbound in the northbound lanes before colliding with two other vehicles. The freeway’s north side was closed for several hours reopening around 7 a.m. Sunday.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the driver of the black Audi sedan was observed traveling in the wrong direction before the collision. Six individuals were transported to local hospitals, with one person suffering serious injuries. The identities of those involved and further details about the crash have not been released by authorities.

The Loop 101, also known as the Pima Freeway, is a major thoroughfare in the Phoenix metropolitan area, connecting Scottsdale, Tempe, and Mesa. Wrong-way crashes on freeways are a persistent safety concern, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high speeds and heavy traffic on these roads.

This incident follows a pattern of similar crashes in the region, highlighting the ongoing need for improved driver awareness and traffic safety measures. Arizona Department of Transportation officials confirmed that the northbound lanes were closed for several hours to allow for cleanup and investigation, causing significant traffic disruptions for commuters.

As of Sunday morning, the Loop 101 had reopened to traffic, but the impact of the crash on the community and the investigation into its cause remain ongoing. Authorities have not yet released additional information about the driver’s condition or the status of the other individuals involved.
