Why did the death rates of children and young people soar?

The cause of the rapid increase in US pediatric deaths… Murder, accidental drug overdose, car accident, death from extreme exertion, etc.
COVID-19 deaths have contributed to the recent increase in child deaths, but the increase in deaths from injuries overshadows the effect.

The life satisfaction of domestic teenagers is at the bottom… The rate of extreme attempts by children and young people is increasing every year

For decades, progress has been made in efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality among children. But now our children are experiencing an increase in deaths from other causes, which is a growing concern.

According to a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, child and adolescent mortality rates in the United States increased by 20% between 2019 and 2021, the largest increase in at least 50 years.

What kills children, other than diseases like premature birth, childhood cancer, and birth defects?

Surprisingly, the surge in child deaths is mainly caused by homicides between the ages of 10 and 19, accidental drug overdoses, car accidents, and deaths from extreme exertion.

This was based on data from death certificates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which found that the recent increase in “all-cause deaths”, a measure of all deaths among children and young people, was mainly due to an increase in certain injuries. – related deaths that started long before the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, researchers found that rates of extreme attempts among 10-19-year-olds began to increase in 2007 and increased by 70% by 2019. The homicide rate began to increase in 2013 and increased by 33% by 2019. The number of overdose deaths began to rise in 2019. Deaths from car accidents have increased dramatically in frequency in 2020 and 2021.

“Injury-related deaths have reached a tipping point where so many of the gains from treating other diseases are offset.”

Although deaths from COVID-19 have contributed to an increase in child mortality in recent years, their impact has been overshadowed by an increase in deaths from injuries. Although the rate of COVID-19 deaths among children and young people in 2020 was 0.24 per 100,000, the increase in deaths related to injuries alone was almost 12 times higher.

In the United States, these deaths are closely related to the use of guns, which is why we often hear about the shooting of children in the news. Regional and racial disparities also affect access to mental health care.

Will my country be ok?

The life satisfaction of domestic teenagers was surveyed to be fourth from the bottom, following Britain (64%), Japan (62%), and Turkey (53%), which were at the bottom.

According to the indicator report “Quality of Life of Children and Adolescents 2022” released by the National Statistical Office on the 27th of last year, the suicide rate, the main cause of death of children and young people in 2021, was 2.7 per 100,000 people. In addition, the suicide rate between the ages of 12 and 14 increased from 1.1 in 2000 to 3.3 in 2009 and then decreased to 1.3 in 2016.

The extreme attempt rate of domestic children and adolescents has been increasing every year since 2015, and life satisfaction is at the bottom of OECD member countries. Since COVID-19, the rate of malnutrition has increased, and the participation rate in private education has increased. Although the damage of peer violence decreased, the damage of child abuse increased.

“Danger of children not reaching adulthood”

Scientists say the risk of children not reaching adulthood could continue to rise without bold research and policy action to reverse the trend.

“Modern medicine has fought childhood diseases, but the threats to our children are now man-made. If action is not taken, bullets, drugs and cars will continue to take the lives of those most precious to us.”
