Whitespark and Local Falcon Data Reveal Stark Divide in Search Intent
Research from Whitespark divides consumer queries into three distinct categories to measure how artificial intelligence impacts visibility. For local queries such as personal injury lawyers in Phoenix, artificial intelligence overviews appeared in 15 percent of results compared to 93 percent for Local Packs. Informational queries saw artificial intelligence overviews on 92 percent of searches while Local Packs appeared on only 6 percent. Hybrid queries triggered artificial intelligence overviews 97 percent of the time and Local Packs 17 percent of the time.

Additional analysis from Local Falcon published in January 2026 examined more than 50 million United States search results across 1,993 business categories. That study observed that artificial intelligence-generated local recommendations drew heavily on public data from Google Maps, reviews, ratings, and Business Profiles. A separate Local Falcon study from March 2026 compared 189,905 ChatGPT results with millions of Google local results for restaurant queries, finding that 83 percent of restaurants were completely invisible in ChatGPT compared to 14 percent in Google.
Physical Locations Drive Customer Acquisition Assets
For businesses seeking expansion, establishing legitimate physical locations remains a primary customer acquisition strategy rather than merely an operational decision. Each new site creates another geographic point from which to compete, generating an additional Google Business Profile, Maps presence, review profile, and proximity point. Google local ranking factors rely heavily on relevance, distance, and prominence, meaning a strong website can still struggle in Maps searches far from its physical office. Opening locations closer to target customers solves proximity hurdles that backlinks and content cannot clear.
Online Reviews Shape Consumer Conversion Layers
Data from the BrightLocal 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey indicates that 97 percent of consumers read online reviews for local businesses. Furthermore, 71 percent of consumers rely on Google for those reviews, outperforming any other platform. Separate BrightLocal research from 2026 establishes that 65 percent of consumers who rejected a local business did so due to negative reviews, low ratings, or an insufficient volume of feedback. Artificial intelligence systems also process the natural-language detail found in these reviews to understand specific business offerings.
According to entrepreneur.com, the best strategy isn’t chasing the channel undergoing the biggest change; it’s finding where customers still show purchase intent and building a defensible presence there.
