Richmond International Airport (RIC) reported an all-time record for passenger traffic in March 2026, as travelers increasingly favor the regional facility over larger aviation hubs. According to data released by the airport on April 29, 2026, 417,648 passengers traveled through the terminal during the month.
The March figure represents a 5.5% increase over the same period in 2025 and surpasses the previous March record of 413,316 passengers established in 2024. This growth contributed to a 3% increase in passenger traffic for fiscal year-to-date 2026, representing a gain of more than 100,000 passengers.
Operational and Financial Growth
The surge in passenger volume was accompanied by significant growth in other airport operations. Total cargo volume rose 11.8% and aircraft operations increased 7.4% compared to March 2025.
Financial reports for March indicated that operating revenues totaled $7.6 million, exceeding budget projections by $1.2 million, or 19.8%. Fiscal year-to-date 2026 revenues rose by $4.4 million, an 8% increase, to reach $58.7 million.
Operating expenses for March were approximately $100,000, or 1.5%, under budget. For the fiscal year-to-date, expenses totaled $34.1 million, which is $1.9 million, or 5.2%, below budget projections.
Drivers of Passenger Preference
The shift toward Richmond International Airport is attributed to a preference for convenience and ease of navigation. The airport has previously been recognized by the Air Transport Research Society as the most efficient airport in North America among facilities serving fewer than 5 million passengers per year.
A study by FinanceBuzz.com ranked the airport number one in the nation for the ease of making connecting flights, noting that it takes just two minutes to walk end-to-end of an average-sized terminal.
Perry J. Miller, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Capital Region Airport Commission, stated on January 30, 2026, that the growth in passenger numbers demonstrates the Richmond region’s desire for convenient, customer-forward air travel options
.
Airline Market Share and Route Expansion
American Airlines maintained the lead in market share for March 2026 with 30.8% of passengers, followed by Delta at 24.8% and United at 12.5%.
The airport is expanding its offerings ahead of the summer season. Several routes are scheduled to restart in May 2026, including:
- Service to Nashville via Allegiant.
- Service to Charleston, S.C., Islip, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, and San Francisco via Breeze.
- Service to Minneapolis/St. Paul via Sun Country.
Other recent additions include nonstop service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, via JetBlue, as well as new flights to Atlanta and Denver through Frontier Airlines.
Summer Outlook and Economic Pressures
Despite the record-breaking March, some projections for the summer travel season have been revised downward. A report by the Henrico Citizen on April 28, 2026, indicated that airport officials expect a slight decline in passenger totals this summer.
Officials attributed these projections to economic pressures and geopolitical turmoil, which may cause travelers to hold back on their plans. The report noted that Spirit Airlines is shrinking its footprint at the airport following its August bankruptcy filing and rising oil costs.
Long-term ambitions for the facility remain high. A task force created by the Greater Richmond Partnership is currently seeking funding to establish the airport’s first nonstop flights to Europe.
