Title: Box Office Success: “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” Shine
“Wicked” and “Gladiator II” generated $270 million in total ticket sales worldwide, revitalizing a struggling box office. This weekend became one of the busiest for moviegoers this year.
“Wicked,” directed by Jon M. Chu and featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, earned $114 million in the U.S. and $164.2 million globally. This opening marks the third-biggest of the year and sets a record for Broadway musical adaptations.
“Gladiator II,” a sequel to the acclaimed 2000 film, debuted with $55.5 million domestically. Its production cost approximately $250 million. Starring Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal, it did not meet the $60 million opening prediction but performed well internationally, adding $50.5 million from overseas markets.
Before this weekend, box office revenue was down 11% compared to last year and 25% compared to pre-pandemic levels. The strong performance of these two films signifies a much-needed boost for theaters, especially with “Moana 2” set to release on Wednesday.
Film consultant David A. Gross noted that the success of these movies invigorated the box office after a lackluster summer.
While “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” released simultaneously, the impact was different from last year’s “Barbenheimer” event. The new nickname, “Glicked,” did not resonate as strongly, but both films attracted distinct audiences. About 72% of “Wicked” viewers were female, while 61% of “Gladiator II” attendees were male.
Both films employed extensive marketing campaigns. “Wicked” included Mattel dolls and an Airbnb promotion at the Colosseum, while Paramount aired a one-minute trailer across over 4,000 networks and platforms for “Gladiator II.”
“Wicked” is anticipated to have a successful run, despite competition from “Moana 2.” It received excellent reviews and an “A” from CinemaScore. Oscar watchers predict it will contend for best picture.
“Gladiator II” also received positive reviews, especially for Washington’s performance, but audiences rated it lower with a “B” on CinemaScore. Its international earnings helped mitigate this, as it had already made $87 million globally before its North American launch.
