Ospreay believes Hayabusa, a former star in Japan’s Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling, deserves more recognition for his innovative aerial techniques and his overall role in shaping modern wrestling.
ospreay recalled being captivated by Hayabusa’s moves, such as the 450 splash and shooting star press, early in his career.He was deeply affected upon learning of Hayabusa’s paralysis in 2001.
To honor Hayabusa’s legacy, Ospreay sought permission to wear a mask inspired by the late wrestler during a major event. He contacted Hayabusa’s daughter and received her blessing to don the mask at last year’s Forbidden Door event, in front of 11,000 fans. A custom mask was created for Ospreay, a gesture he found deeply moving.
“Hayabusa was such a huge inspiration to me,” Ospreay saeid. “I feel like he’s not appreciated as much.”
“It was 2022, I really wanted to don the mask,” Ospreay mentioned. “She was honored. She was like, ‘No one talks about my dad anymore.’ Not only that,she was like,’Thank you so much.'”
