The cooperative pirate survival game Windrose has achieved a significant milestone by selling over one million copies within just six days of its Early Access launch on PC platforms.
According to developer Kraken Express and publisher Pocketpair Publishing, the game reached this sales figure less than a week after launching on Steam and the Epic Games Store on April 14, 2026. The announcement was made via a Steam community update post on April 19, 2026, highlighting both the sales achievement and strong player engagement.
The game also reported surpassing 200,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, with SteamDB recording a peak of 211,177 players at the time of the announcement. This level of concurrent activity indicates strong player retention and active community participation shortly after launch.
Windrose, previously known as Crosswind, debuted to ‘Very Positive’ reviews during its Early Access rollout. The developers describe it as a “PvE survival adventure in the Age of Piracy,” emphasizing cooperation and progression from island survival to seafaring piracy. The game supports one to four players and is set in an alternate 18th-century Caribbean setting.
Initially conceived as a free-to-play MMO, the development team shifted to a premium multiplayer focus based on feedback from alpha testing. Kraken Express stated that this pivot has been validated by the game’s strong reception and early sales performance.
The developers expressed gratitude to the player base, noting in their Steam post: “Your support for the game is absolutely astonishing, and your patience while we are working on fixes is truly heart-warming.” They added that they continue to monitor community feedback, including reviews, comments, streams, and videos, as they work toward a full 1.0 release.
Kraken Express indicated that the full version of Windrose is expected to launch within the next 1.5 to 2.5 years, contingent on ongoing development and community input during the Early Access phase.
As of the announcement date, Windrose remains available in Early Access on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, with no official confirmation yet regarding potential releases on other platforms such as PlayStation 5.
