‘Warr’ catastrophe during the re-opening ceremony of the suspension bridge

In Mexico, a suspension bridge installed over a valley collapsed during a re-opening ceremony, causing about 20 people to fall.

According to foreign media such as The Guardian, on the 7th local time, the bridge collapsed while attendees crossed the bridge at the suspension bridge reopening ceremony held in Cuernavaca, Morelos, about 70 km south of Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. The wooden bridge floor was pulled down as it separated from the weight-bearing chain railing.

Mayor Jose Luis Uriostegui’s wife and reporters, as well as people crossing the bridge, fell 3 meters below the bridge. The Cuernavaca city government said in a statement that four city councilors, two other city officials and a local journalist were injured and taken to hospital on a stretcher from a canyon. According to local Millennio TV, about 25 people were injured and there were no serious injuries.

In a video reported by the local media, about 20 people in attendance, including the mayor’s couple, were laughing while crossing the bridge, screaming and falling in an instant.

“Someone carelessly jumped on the bridge”

“There seemed to be more people on the bridge than it should be.”

Mayor Yuriostegi told reporters after receiving treatment at the hospital for minor injuries, saying: “Someone jumped carelessly and his legs couldn’t bear the weight.” He added, “The opening ceremony was crowded with government officials and reporters, and unfortunately there were more people on the bridge than the appropriate number.”

An official from Morelos said, “We will have to investigate whether it is due to overweight, a construction defect, or whether the remodeling was not done properly.”

Cuernavaca is a nearby tourist city that Mexico City citizens also enjoy.
