A professional wrestler in Mexico was arrested on suspicion of culpable homicide on October 7, 2026, after a 75-year-old veteran referee died in the ring following an alleged banned maneuver. The incident occurred during an independent lucha libre event promoted by El Patrón Espectáculos in Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo. Referee Gerardo Germán Pineda, widely known as “El Búho”, suffered fatal injuries after being struck with a martinete, commonly referred to as a piledriver.
The Arrest of El Hijo de Fishman in Hidalgo
Wrestler El Hijo de Fishman, 36, was taken into custody by police at the venue and handed over to prosecutors on charges equivalent to manslaughter. According to match attendee Steph Heredia, the wrestler had argued with the official following a defeat prior to the execution of the maneuver. Onlookers initially believed the aftermath was scripted entertainment. “We all thought it was part of the show because it is something that happens very commonly,” Heredia stated.
Decades of Refereeing Ended in the Ring
Gerardo Germán Pineda spent roughly 15 years competing in the sport under the name El Búho Negro II before transitioning into officiating nearly 30 years ago after filling in for a missing official. Throughout his career in the ring, he worked alongside prominent Mexican wrestling figures including Mil Máscaras, Canek, Dos Caras, El Hijo del Santo, Último Guerrero, and Blue Panther. The martinete is prohibited in standard Mexican lucha libre matches due to the severe risk of neck and spinal damage.
Questions Over Emergency Response Times
Reports indicate that critical delays surrounded the medical response at the venue in Hidalgo. Writing on X, Luchablog stated that El Búho lay on the mat unmoving for minutes before anyone checked on him, under the assumption that he was selling the move. The same commentary noted that no ambulance or medical personnel were on hand at the venue despite being required for Hidalgo shows, and that paramedics could only confirm the referee had passed away upon arrival.
