Arrest warrant issued for Kim Seong-tae… Will the suspicion of paying attorney fees accelerate?

[앵커]

Kim Seong-tae, the former chairman of the Ssangbangwool Group, was arrested in Thailand and returned to Korea after 8 months of escaping abroad.

Attention is focused on whether an investigation will be conducted into the suspicion that the prosecution paid lawyer’s fees for Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung instead while securing former chairman Kim’s new recruit.

The court has issued arrest warrants for former chairman Kim Seong-tae and current chairman Yang Seon-gil, who are the real owners of Ssangbangwool Group.

The court stated the reason for issuing the warrant, saying, “Criminal charges have been cleared and there are concerns about destruction of evidence and escape.”

Former chairman Kim and others previously submitted a waiver that they would not attend the interrogation of the suspect before the arrest, so the court issued a warrant without questioning.

Former chairman Kim’s lawyer said, “I decided to be investigated in good faith, and I stopped participating in the warrant review in the sense of self-reflection.”

Prosecutors requested an arrest warrant for Kim on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust, breach of the Capital Market Act, breach of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, bribery, and destruction of evidence early yesterday morning (19th).

In addition, charges related to the payment of attorney fees by Lee Jae-myeong, representative of the Democratic Party, were not applied.

Former Chairman Kim is known to deny most of the related accusations, although he is conducting an investigation without refusing to make a statement or exercise the right to remain silent.

It is our observation that the prosecution will seriously investigate the suspicion of paying Lee’s attorney’s fees as the prosecution secures the recruit of former chairman Kim.
