A week has passed since the controversy regarding the penny transactions of the Democratic Party’s penny, Kim Nam-guk, arose.

When suspicion arose that Representative Kim had traded coins during the National Assembly hearing and the Itaewon disaster meeting, the Democratic Party initiated a de facto disciplinary process against Representative Kim.

Representative Kim, a member of the Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly, was further suspected of trading virtual assets during a meeting held to investigate the poor response to the Itaewon disaster at the personnel hearing of the candidate for Minister of Justice Han Dong- last year.

<김남국 / 더불어민주당 의원(지난해 5월 9일)> “If you lied, if you gave a false explanation, it would be considered a serious moral lapse.”

Previously, on the 5th, Congressman Kim began to clarify after it was known that he owns 6 billion worth of virtual asset ‘Wemix’, but only suspicions such as possession of additional coins, abnormal transactions, source of funds, lobbying legislative, and conflicts of interest increase.

In addition, if the suspicion that a member of the National Assembly has made personal investments during legislative activities such as hearings is found to be true, disciplinary action can be taken by the National Assembly Act.

In the end, CEO Lee Jae-myeong ordered an urgent ethics inspection of Rep. Kim apart from the fact-finding team.

<권칠승 / 더불어민주당 수석대변인> “(In the ethics inspection), the part about maintaining dignity…(Withdrawal from the party) should be seen as your personal decision.”

Meanwhile, the party leadership has responded to Congressman Kim’s argument by saying, “It does not match public sentiment, but there is no illegal situation.”

However, as public opinion worsened, such as a survey where the party’s approval rating plummeted, especially among young people, it appears that the party has actually resorted to initiating disciplinary procedures.

While the theory of Kim withdrawing from the party exploded inside and outside the party, Representative Lee Won-wook of the screaming world called for severe punishment, saying, “Just is a way of avoiding responsibility.”

Rep. Lee’s ongoing judicial risk, doubt over the 2021 National Convention purse, and Congressman Kim’s money controversy.

The general assembly scheduled for Sunday is expected to be held as a venue to criticize the party’s crisis and the leadership’s response.
