HBO original series ‘Sympathy’ released on the 15th

This is the story of a young North Vietnamese spy who defected to the United States after the Vietnam War ended.

“Two bloods. Two languages. I am a combination of contradictions. So what did you do? (Welcome to the world of spies)”

Based on the novel of the same name by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Vietnamese-American author, director Park Chan-wook supervised the entire process from production, screenplay, and directing.

Director Park borrowed events and lines from the original work and differentiated them with black comedy elements.

“I tried to write a lot of things that were well-mixed with emotions and situations, and sometimes even funny. Overall, I tried to make a work that was much funnier than a novel.”

Above all, although it is the story of Vietnam and the United States before and after the war, it is said to be no different from our own story.

“The reason I did this work was because Vietnam’s modern history is so similar to ours. If you look at it, you can see that even though they speak a different language, there are people similar to us who are going through similar things.”

He also expressed his expectation that his next work would be a movie.

“This time, I really want to do it in Korea. Next, I really want to do a theater piece.”

The 7-part ‘Sympathizer’ will be released one episode every Monday until the 27th of next month.
