Zelensky wants to join NATO – Scholz & Biden for help

In Davos, the Ukrainian president called for further support. Scholz and Biden discuss ongoing aid for Ukraine by telephone.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned against a “freeze” of Russia’s war against his country during his appearance at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos. At the same time, he reiterated hopes that Ukraine would join NATO. In courting additional billions and arms deliveries, Zelensky received support from the EU and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda, whom Zelensky met in Davos on Tuesday evening, promised further support. Duda announced that the new Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk would travel to Ukraine. He will visit Kiev “in a few days” to discuss details of further cooperation.

Another topic of the conversation with Duda was the coordination between the two countries before the NATO summit in Washington, Zelensky said on his Telegram channel. He also informed Duda about the current situation at the front, Zelenskyj said on his Telegram channel. Ukraine is supported by Poland in its desire to join the NATO military alliance.

Scholz and Biden make a phone call about Ukraine

In light of the current developments, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and US President Joe Biden spoke on the phone. According to their governments, among other things, they wanted to exchange information about ongoing support for Ukraine. Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said it was agreed that it was necessary to continue to support the country attacked by Russia financially, militarily and humanitarianally.

According to Hebestreit, Scholz and Biden did not discuss the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles from Germany to Ukraine during their phone call. The Chancellor had made a commitment dependent on coordination with the US government. Scholz’s trust in the US President is great, the government spokesman added when asked whether the US government would still provide military aid to Ukraine despite resistance in the US Congress.
