Ukraine Seeks Accelerated Electricity Imports Amidst Intensified Russian Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged ⁣for ‍a rapid increase in electricity imports and the delivery of additional power equipment on‍ Saturday, as Russia’s ongoing attacks⁣ on ⁤ukraine’s infrastructure have triggered the country’s most severe energy crisis since the ⁣start of the war.

Zelenskyy⁢ stated on social media ⁣that Kyiv, along with the Kharkiv and Zaporizhia regions, are ⁢experiencing especially significant power outages due to the escalated Russian strikes.

“We need to accelerate as ‍much as⁣ possible the‍ increase in⁣ electricity imports and ⁣the provision of ⁣additional equipment from partners,” zelenskyy said. “All decisions for this are already in place, and the increase in imports must proceed without delay.”

The Ukrainian government has declared a national energy emergency, reporting that the damaged power grid currently⁤ meets only 60 percent of the country’s electricity ‍needs. ‍ exceptionally cold temperatures‍ are compounding the crisis, leaving Ukrainian families struggling to heat their homes.

Russia has consistently targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure⁤ during the winter months since launching its invasion‍ in February 2022, aiming to pressure Ukrainian leadership into⁤ accepting Moscow’s terms. The United Nations ‍and other international observers have condemned the recent ⁢attacks, highlighting the vulnerability of children ⁢and the elderly.
