In the evening on the 14th local time, an explosion occurred in a coal mine in the Amasra region on the Black Sea coast of northern Turkey.

110 people were working underground at the time of the accident.

People close to the ground quickly fled, but people working hundreds of meters underground suffered great damage.

Rescue teams arrived and carried out rescue operations, but 20 people were found dead and 11 people injured and taken to hospital.

Rescue work was carried out overnight as it was determined that around 10 people were trapped because a tunnel 300 meters underground had collapsed due to the explosion.

However, there was a fire in the tunnel and poisonous gas was produced, which made rescue work difficult.

The families of the missing people stayed at the scene all night, hoping they would be alive, but the rescue operation ended when they were all found dead.

It is assumed that the accident occurred when the methane gas in the tunnel was ignited.

Black smoke from the fire in the tunnel is still rising at the accident site.

In 2014, a coal mine fire in the western Soma region of Turkiye claimed a total of 301 lives.
