Japan’s daily new confirmed cases of COVID-19 surpassed 20,000 for the first time since the coronavirus outbreak.

Surprised by the explosive spread, regional government heads criticized the Japanese government’s lax quarantine policy and requested a strong review of containment measures.

Yesterday, around 20,360 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed across Japan.

It broke the record for three days in a row and surpassed 20,000 for the first time since the corona crisis.

Compared to the same day of the week a week ago, this is an increase of over 30%.

The average number of new confirmed cases per day in the last week has more than doubled from two weeks ago.

The explosive spread continues across the country.

In the capital, Tokyo, 5,770 new cases were reported, the highest number ever.

A whopping 17 of 47 metropolitan governments broke the record for the highest number of new confirmed cases.

As COVID-19 spreads out of control, criticism of the Japanese government’s quarantine policy is growing.

The National Governors’ Association, a meeting of regional government heads, also strongly criticized the government’s quarantine policy for not being effective at all.

[요시무라 요시후미 / 오사카 지사 : 바이러스의 종류가 바뀌었는데 우리의 대책은 전과 다름없다는 문제를 생각하지 않으면 안 됩니다.]

He also called on the government to review drastic measures such as city blockades and issue a strong message to the people.
