[국제]Guns are the leading cause of death for Americans in their teens and twenties… Koreans lead the protest movement

Dog-related incidents continue to occur across the United States, and are now more common than car accidents.

An elderly Korean compatriot in the United States has begun leading an anti-gun movement, saying gun accidents can no longer be ignored.

Reporter In-Young Jo delivers.

Last year, more than 45,000 people died in shootings in the United States.

That’s an average of more than 120 people a day.

So far this year, more than 30,000 people have died.

During the Labor Day holiday earlier this month, nine people were killed in a shooting in Philadelphia, USA.

The number of police shooting victims is increasing year on year.

As such, as mass shootings continue to occur across the United States, citizen concern does not go away.

Specifically, the leading cause of death among young people in their 20s and under in the United States was ‘gun accidents’.

More young people die in gun accidents each year than in car accidents.

[안선희 / 미국 필라델피아 : 얼마 전에 두 살짜리 아이가 총기를 가지고 놀다가 아버지를 쏜 사건이 있다고 들었거든요. 그런 사건을 볼 때마다 많이 안타깝고 이런 것에 규제가 강화됐으면….]

Park Doo-seo, a Korean-American living in Philadelphia, has been campaigning against gun ownership since last year.

There is only one reason to do this campaign around the community, despite its old age.

[박두서 / 미국 필라델피아 : 우리 후손들이 아직도 흑인 동네에서 생업을 하고 있는데 그분들이 아주 불안에 떨고 장사하고 있죠. 그래서 이분들이 다리 쭉 뻗고 안전한 곳에서 장사 잘하라는 소망뿐이고….]

So far, more than 10,000 people have signed the ‘Anti-Gun Possession Movement’.

Even if it takes a long time, Park plans to send 100,000 signatures to the Pennsylvania state government to urge basic measures to strengthen gun control.
