Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the death penalty could not be ruled out for two Americans captured during the Ukrainian war.
Peskov said in an interview with NBC in the US that when asked if captive Americans could be sentenced to death, “it depends on the results of the investigation.”
The spokesperson stressed that Alexander Druk and Andy Huin, both former U.S. military veterans who joined the Ukrainian army, will face trial over alleged involvement in illegal activities, including shooting at Russian soldiers.
In particular, he repeatedly said that the two Americans who were captured were mercenaries, not legal combatants, and that they could not receive protection under the Geneva Conventions and should be punished.
As of March this year, Ukraine said that 20,000 people from 52 countries participated in the International Homeland Defense Corps, a foreign volunteer unit, but it is not known how many people are currently active in this unit.
