The researchers discovered the galaxies GLASS-z13 and GLASS-z11 together. In particular, GLASS-z13 is a galaxy 13.5 billion years ago, and it has only been 300 million years since the universe was formed by a big explosion (Big Bang) 13.8 billion years ago. The oldest galaxy in the past is GN-z11, observed by Professor Pascal Ouch with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2015, known to be 13.4 billion years old. In other words, the galactic observation record was advanced by 100 million years.

The researchers estimated the age of the galaxy by using the phenomenon of ‘redshift’. Redshift is a phenomenon in which the wavelength of light becomes longer due to the self-expansion of the universe, resulting in a reddish color. In the past, the Hubble Space Telescope could only observe visible light, but James Webb was able to measure infrared light with his far infrared camera (NIRcam). The researchers will further analyze the light spectrum to determine the galaxy’s more accurate age.

James Webb is the largest and most powerful space telescope in human history. To develop it, NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) have collaborated. In particular, James Webb drew a lot of attention when he released the first full-color space photo on the 11th of this month. James Webb captured the light of the galaxy cluster ‘SMACS 0723’, which is estimated to have formed 4.6 billion years ago.

Meanwhile, China’s space telescope is also paying attention as James Webb’s remarkable achievements have been announced. In April, China announced that it would launch a large space telescope, Xintian, next year to begin space observations. The China Manned Spacecraft Engineering and Construction Office (CMSEO) explained that Xintian can observe both ultraviolet, visible and infrared light from space, and the observation area is 300 times larger than that of Hubble.
