Windows 11 24H2 Update: Automatic BitLocker Encryption Raises Concerns

Foreign media reported on the 7th (local time) that Microsoft’s next major update, “Windows 11 24H2 version”, will provide a new encryption process that automatically activates “BitLocker” during installation.

According to a report from German media outlet Deskmodder, the new encryption process not only affects Windows 11 Pro users but also Windows 11 Home users.

For all versions of Windows 11, starting from 24H2, the feature will be automatically enabled/re-enabled during reinstallation and also applies when you update your system to the 24H2 version. The C: drive and all other drives connected to the system during reinstallation will also be encrypted.

Bitlocker encryption is a tool that can help protect sensitive information, but if storage-related issues occur on a user’s PC during a reinstall without knowing that drive encryption has been enabled, encryption could result in loss of all access to data stored on the drive reported.

Additionally, BitLocker has been confirmed to affect SSD (solid state drive) performance. According to a test conducted by TOMS Hardware last year, when the Bitlocker software encryption feature for SSDs is enabled in Windows 11 Pro, SSD speed is reduced by up to 45% depending on the application.

There are also some ways to disable Bitlocker encryption. First, during the installation process, you will be given the option to disable encryption in Settings – Privacy & Security, and when you create a bootable ISO using the Rufus program, a selection window will appear allowing you to disable Bitlocker encryption.

Another way is to open the registry via Command Prompt (Shift+F10) during installation and change Bitlocker’s “PreventDeviceEncryption” key to 1 to disable it.
