As North Korea accelerates its development of hypersonic missiles, the South Korean military is also hastening to build a missile defense system to prevent it.
The Air Force has entered the research service process to establish a next-generation intercept system using advanced technologies such as high-power lasers.

North Korea launched a hypersonic missile test in January, following September last year.
In the presence of Chairman Kim Jong-un, he demonstrated the missile’s turning maneuverability, that is, its ability to evade intercepting missiles.
Hypersonic missiles and missiles capable of anomalous maneuvering, such as the KN-23, are highly pointed out that there are limits to preventing them with the South Korean military’s existing missile interceptors.

Accordingly, the Air Force is conducting a service procedure to study a plan to build a next-generation missile defense weapon system.
As the next-generation missile interception system, laser-coupled anti-aircraft weapons such as Israel’s ‘iron beam’, high-power electromagnetic waves, EMP and ‘super cannon’ railguns are mentioned.
Through this study, the Air Force plans to analyze the ROK military’s ability to respond to new North Korean missiles and when it is possible to deploy advanced defense technologies.
It is also expected to consider ways to speed up the detection and tracking of North Korean missiles and the capture of intercept points.
However, the Korea-Japan military information protection agreement and the normalization of GSOMIA still remain a diplomatic task in sharing information between the United States and Japan for rapid response to North Korea.
