94‘Koozhangal / Pebbles’, a Tamil film selected as India’s Official Entry to the Oscars, has been dropped from the final list. Producer Vighenesh Sivan shared the shortlist for the Academy Awards. Directed by newcomer PS Vinod Raj, the film is produced by Nayanthara and Vighnesh Sivan.

‘It’s a great achievement to be able to see if there is a mess in this list. But the joy and pride that could have been given to independent filmmakers and producers like us would have been special if it had made it to the list. On this occasion, I would like to thank Vinod Raja for directing such an innocent film. Thanks also to the Indian jury members who selected our film as an Oscar entry ‘, tweeted Vignesh Sivan.

The 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 27, 2022 in Los Angeles. Koozhangal turns the camera on the lives of Ganapathy and his son Velu who are addicted to alcohol. Ganapathi and his son are on a journey to bring back their estranged wife. The story revolves around the drought stricken villages of Madurai. The film had earlier won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival.

The selection committee had a total of 14 films before it, including the Malayalam film Nayat, directed by Martin Prakat, the Tamil film Mandela starring Yogi Babu, the Gujarati film Chello Show, and the Bollywood films Sherney and Sardar Uddham. Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Jallikuttu and Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy have represented India at the Oscars in recent years. But no Indian film has won the award so far.
