Former Trump administration border czar Tom Homan will oversee U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Minnesota following the killing of Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis, the White House announced Monday.
“Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me,” President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt added that homan will work with officials investigating fraud schemes in Minnesota.
Trump stated Homan hasn’t previously been involved in Minnesota, where thousands of federal agents are enforcing the administration’s deportation policies.
Federal agents have fatally shot two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis in under a month, sparking widespread protests, criticism of ICE from Democrats, and calls for de-escalation from business leaders.
Trump’s decision to put Homan in charge comes as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and other officials face criticism – even from gun-rights groups and some conservatives – regarding their handling of the situation in Minneapolis.
Fox News reported Sunday that some senior immigration enforcement officials are ”uneasy & frustrated” with the Department of Homeland security’s public statements following the latest shooting.
Axios reported last month that Noem and Homan have a strained working relationship.
