ABA Sues⁢ Trump Administration,⁢ Citing ⁣Law Firm Intimidation

The American Bar Association (ABA) has filed a lawsuit against‍ the Trump administration, alleging a campaign of intimidation‌ against major law firms.⁢ The suit, lodged in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., contends that a series⁣ of executive orders targeting firms based ‌on past ⁤clients and employees are unconstitutional.

The ABA,⁢ the ⁣largest voluntary professional association for ‍lawyers in the ‌country, claims the executive orders were⁢ designed to coerce‌ firms into abandoning clients ‍and causes disfavored by the president.Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director ⁣Kash Patel, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are among the ⁢dozens⁣ of officials named in the ⁤suit.

The ABA called President Trump’s attacks on law firms “uniquely destructive.” The organization ⁤emphasized the ⁤critical role of skilled lawyers in⁤ ensuring⁣ the judiciary can effectively check the executive branch.

Previously, four law firms individually sued the administration over the same executive orders, ‌which had stripped lawyers of security ‍clearances and limited their access to government officials and federal ⁢contracts. Judges ‍sided with the firms in ⁢those cases, issuing temporary or permanent injunctions against the orders. Susman Godfrey, a firm that ⁣secured a preliminary victory in it’s own suit, is representing the ABA in this latest legal challenge.

White House spokesperson Harrison Fields dismissed the ABA’s lawsuit as “clearly ‍frivolous.” Fields asserted the president’s⁢ discretion in awarding government contracts and security clearances to law firms and expressed confidence in an⁢ ultimate victory for the administration.

Despite earlier court setbacks, nine law firms reportedly struck deals with the president, pledging nearly $1 billion in free legal services to avoid similar executive orders. This lawsuit escalates the conflict between ‍the ABA and the Trump‌ administration, which has already ⁣cut ⁢funding to the group and sought to limit its role in vetting judicial nominees.

Bondi warned the ABA ⁤in March that it could lose its accreditation authority over law schools if it did not eliminate a requirement related to⁤ student diversity. The role of diversity in legal education remains a point of contention.

What’s next

The lawsuit is expected to proceed through the courts, perhaps ‌setting a significant precedent regarding ⁤executive power and the independence of the legal profession.
