Fortnite to Unleash AI NPCs via Unreal Editor

Epic Games is set to empower Fortnite creators with the ability to develop AI-driven non-player characters (NPCs), mirroring the functionality of the recently introduced AI Darth Vader. The proclamation was made at the company’s State of Unreal event.
using the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), creators will be able to craft characters with distinct personalities capable of engaging in voice chat. This feature, slated for release later this year, will allow creators to define voice types, delivery styles, and core characteristics for their AI NPCs.
During a live presentation at the event, Epic staff showcased a conversation with an AI character named “Mr.Buttons.” Mr. Buttons’ sole purpose was to encourage players to press a large red button.One staff member inquired about on-screen warnings against pressing the button, to which the AI character advocated disregarding the rules and pushing it.
In May, Fortnite introduced an AI Darth Vader NPC, voiced using an AI recreation of James Earl Jones’ voice, with the actor’s estate’s approval. However, a subsequent hotfix was required after players prompted the AI Darth Vader to use inappropriate language.
In addition to AI NPCs, Epic is beta-testing the Epic Developer Assistant, an AI chatbot designed to aid UEFN creators in writing code using the Verse programming language. The beta test is currently live.
Epic Games also revealed upcoming additions to UEFN, including assets from new franchises. Squid Game assets will be available starting June 27, coinciding with the premiere of the show’s third and final season. Creators will be able to publish Squid Game experiences later this summer. Avatar: The last Airbender, previously featured in Fortnite, will be available for creators in 2026. star Wars assets are also planned for future release.
