AI Videos: Ancestra’s Insights & Current State
AI-Generated Film ‘Ancestra’ Ignites Debate Over Art, Job Security
Updated June 19, 2025
Google’s new short film, ancestra, is stirring discussion about the role of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. the film, which explores a mother’s love through computer-generated imagery, has been criticized for its reliance on what some call “AI slop videos.” Critics argue the film champions the technology despite lacking narrative depth.
One point of contention is the film’s visuals, which heavily rely on AI to depict nature scenes and microscopic organisms. these visuals, some say, exemplify AI’s ability to generate uncanny footage that is difficult to integrate into a cohesive film. Director Nicole McNitt said that using AI to create a newborn baby was more practical than casting a real infant.
McNitt acknowledged the unique emotional depth human actors bring to a project. Though, she cited the challenges of working with infant performers as a key reason for turning to AI. She used old photos of herself as a baby to create the digital infant’s face.
The production team combined shots of actress Corsa with the AI-generated baby to create scenes of interaction. While some shots reveal the digital baby’s artificial nature, the fast-paced editing minimizes these imperfections. The film’s more fantastical sequences, intended to represent the healing of a heart defect, appear more obviously AI-generated.
While McNitt noted the involvement of ”hundreds of people” in Ancestra, the film’s production team was relatively small compared to traditional short films.Using AI may reduce costs and time, but some worry about the potential displacement of VFX specialists, concept artists, and storyboarders.
The debate over AI’s role in filmmaking fueled strikes by film and TV actors and writers in 2023. Video game performers have also protested the technology’s potential impact on their jobs. Some industry leaders, like Darren Aronofsky, argue that technology has always been integral to filmmaking. Though, the limitations of current AI technology, such as the short clip lengths generated by Google’s Veo, raise questions about its creative potential.
McNitt said that the generative models influenced her writing process. This suggests that AI’s limitations may have shaped the narrative, perhaps compromising the director’s original vision.Critics question whether the current state of generative AI can produce art that captivates audiences or drives subscriptions to streaming services.Ultimately, some see Ancestra as an advertisement for Google’s AI capabilities, rather than a groundbreaking artistic achievement.
