A California woman found herself overwhelmed with a mountain of unwanted Amazon packages, all shipped to her home due to a frustrating loophole in the company’s return policy for international sellers. Kay, who wished to share her story with ABC7 News, was even offered a $100 Amazon gift balance as a gesture of goodwill – a small consolation for the logistical nightmare unfolding on her property.
The Return Policy Problem: When International Sellers Don’t Comply
The issue stemmed from purchases made from a Chinese seller, Liusandedian, who failed to adhere to Amazon’s return policies. According to Amazon’s guidelines,international sellers have two options when a customer initiates a return: provide a US address for returns or furnish a prepaid international shipping label within 48 hours. Alternatively, they can offer a “returnless refund,” eliminating the need for the customer to ship the item back.
if a seller fails to respond within the two-day window, Amazon is obligated to refund the customer directly, charging the cost to the seller. However, in Liusandedian’s case, the seller seemingly chose to absorb the cost of repeatedly shipping items back to Kay’s house rather than paying for return shipping to China or issuing refunds.
“Why is it my responsibility to get rid of this, when your seller is not following your rules Amazon?” Kay questioned, highlighting the absurdity of the situation. She estimates “thousands of dollars” were spent reshipping packages to her address.
Amazon initially told Kay to either give the packages away, donate them, or haul them back to USPS or FedEx herself – a solution she understandably found unacceptable. Amazon now denies advising her to handle the returns herself.
Amazon Steps In – And Removes the Mountain of Boxes
After ABC7 News contacted Amazon about Kay’s predicament, the company swiftly took action.
“We’d like to thank [KGO] for bringing this to our attention,” Amazon stated in a response. “We’ve apologised to the customer and are working directly with her to pick-up any packages while taking steps to permanently resolve this issue.”
On Wednesday morning, Amazon removed all the packages from Kay’s property, bringing an end to the weeks-long ordeal. The incident underscores the challenges Amazon faces in enforcing its policies on third-party sellers, notably those based internationally.
