Anseong Chiljangsa Temple fire… Former head of the Jogye Order passes away

A fire broke out at Chiljangsa Temple in Anseong, Gyeonggi-do, and monk Jaseung passed away.

At approximately 6:50 p.m. on the 29th, a fire broke out in the Yosachae (a place where monks live) within Chiljangsa Temple, located in Chiljang-ri, Juksan-myeon, Anseong-si.

Firefighters who responded to a report of a fire in the temple’s main building discovered a body inside while extinguishing the fire. It was confirmed that this body was that of monk Jaseung, who served as the head of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.

In relation to this, an official of the Jogye Order said through Yonhap News, “Former General Secretary Jaseung has passed away. We have confirmed that he passed away while living alone.”

He then responded, “We are checking (whether it was an accident or another reason).”
