Last month, the police applied for an arrest warrant for Yang Kyung-soo, chairman of the National Federation of Trade Unions (KCTU), on charges of holding the July 3 National Workers’ Convention in violation of quarantine guidelines.
According to the police on the 6th, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s July 3 illegal protest investigation headquarters applied for a preliminary arrest warrant for Chairman Yang on the afternoon of the same day. The police applied charges such as violating the Assembly and Demonstration Act, the Infectious Disease Prevention Act, and obstruction of general traffic under the Criminal Act. On the 3rd of last month, Chairman Yang held the National Workers’ Congress with an estimated 8,000 people in the Jongno-gu area of Seoul. Chairman Yang appeared at the Jongno Police Station for questioning about a month after the July 3 rally on the 4th.
However, the police’s application for a prior arrest warrant is not limited to the July 3 workers’ convention. A police official said in a phone call, “I applied for a preliminary arrest warrant for Chairman Yang for a series of illegal assemblies in May and July. were considered comprehensively,” he said.
On the other hand, if the prosecution accepts the police’s request and requests a warrant, it is expected that the suspect will be questioned before arrest (examination of warrant) after the weekend.
