ASI Conducts Survey at Jnanvapi Masjid in Varanasi

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has commenced a survey at Jnanvapi Masjid in Varanasi. Following the approval from the Allahabad High Court, the ASI began the survey on Friday morning within the premises of the mosque. A team of 41 officers is participating in the survey, which commenced at 7 am. Adequate security measures have been put in place around the mosque to ensure a safe and smooth operation.

Church Committee Approaches Supreme Court Against High Court Order

On Thursday afternoon, the church committee approached the Supreme Court to challenge the order issued by the High Court. Advocate Nizam Pasha raised the issue during the hearing of petitions related to the cancellation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court DY Chandrachud acknowledged the church committee’s email and stated that it will be taken into consideration.

Varanasi District Court Allows Inspection of Jnanvapi Masjid

In a favorable ruling, the Varanasi District Court granted permission for the inspection of Jnanvapi Masjid based on the claims made by supporters of the Sangh Parivar. They assert that there are remnants of a temple within the western wall of the mosque and propose that prayers be allowed throughout the year. This verdict was announced just two days before the High Court’s ruling. Earlier, there was controversy surrounding Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s statement, in which he urged Muslims to relinquish their claim to the Jnanvapi mosque.

After the Allahabad High Court gave permission, the ASI started the survey in the mosque premises on Friday morning. 41 officers are taking part in the survey which started at 7am. Heavy security has been arranged around the mosque.

Meanwhile, the church committee went to the Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon against the High Court’s order. Advocate Nizam Pasha raised the issue in the constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court DY Chandrachud during the hearing of the petitions against the cancellation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief Justice informed that the e-mail of the church committee can be read.

Sangh Parivar supporters approached the Varanasi District Court and obtained a favorable verdict for the inspection, claiming that there are remains of a temple inside the western wall of the mosque and that it should be allowed to offer prayers throughout the year. Two days before the High Court verdict was announced, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was controversial when he said that Muslims should give up their claim to the Jnanvapi mosque.
