[디지털투데이 AI리포터] The leading cause of death in Korea is cancer. When it comes to cancer, prevention is more important than cure. However, recent research has shown that aspirin prevents the development and progression of colon cancer.

A research team led by Dr. Marco Scarpa from the University of Padua in Italy collected tissue samples from 238 patients who underwent colon cancer surgery between 2015 and 2019 and analyzed the effect of long-term use of aspirin on colon cancer.

As a result, long-term aspirin users had fewer tumor metastases to the lymph glands than those who did not take aspirin. The level of tumor infiltration by immune cells was also higher. An experiment was also conducted in which colon cancer cells were exposed to aspirin and the expression of the CD80 protein gene increased in some immune cells. The CD80 protein gene detects the presence of tumor-related proteins and sends a warning to other immune cells.

However, the concentration at which aspirin is absorbed can vary greatly depending on its location in the large intestine. Dr. Scarpa explains: “To take advantage of the effects of aspirin, we need to think about how to ensure that the drug reaches the large intestine in an adequate dose and takes effect.”

The results of this study were published in the American Cancer Society (ACS) journal “Cancer”.
